Last year I told you how to survive your holidays together, this year I will focus on you singles.
A survey of about 500 men and women shows that half of the singles will feel slightly depressed during and around the holidays, one out of five singles is really depressed. When they hear that (befriended) couples are making for Christmas or they see that them passionately kiss each other a happy New Year, they feel extra down.
To prevent you from going to feel this bad aswell, hereby 10 tips to survive the holidays as a single!
1. Avoid if possible certain parties
Parties consisting of only couples and where the chances are high that people will say that they really do not understand why you're single (like family parties).
2. If you must go to your family, take a friend with you
This will make you feel less lonely, prevents questions we spoke of in 1 and is a favor for your friend as well.
3. Make sure you only do nice things
Not obligated to stay at family? Go do only nice stuff. Doing boring or stupid things only makes you feel more sad. Why would you be cleaning or doing taxes while others are having fun? Just make sure you have some nice activities to do.
4. Don't stay at home!
When you turn on the television, you see nice Christmas dinners and if you look outside, you only see happy couples holding hands walking on their way to cozy family dinners. Go out and make sure you have your plans taking care of already.
But if you do want to sit at home, avoid the sad Christmas movies. Find some nice comedies or adventure films, and avoid romantic comedies. Buy yourself some nice, tasty dinner and make it a party! Cook for yourself, as you would do if you had invited someone.
5. Organize a Christmas dinner with friends and let them bring someone who is not part of that group.
That makes it an exciting and surprising dinner. Do not assume that you might be going to meet your new love, because you might get disappointed. Think of it as an opportunity to expand your circle of friends. Have everyone bring something, this saves money and time.
6. Make plans with other singles and be happy as a group.
7. If you don't know other singles, go meet new people
You can meet people (in the Netherlands) on www.nieuwemensenlerenkennen.nl. This is a site where you can choose from a variety of activities, organized by people who, same as you, are looking to meet new people and make new friends.
8. By all means, go out on Christmas eve!
There are often very nice celebration parties on Christmas Eve in the city. Make it late and enjoy it. This way you will be sleeping long, spending the first day mostly relaxing in bed, so you don't have to deal with that day anymore.
P.S. make sure you order you entry tickets in time!
9. Go on vacation to a country where they do not celebrate Christmas
If you can afford it, just skip Christmas and go on a holiday to a warm country, like somewhere in Asia for example.

10. Relativize; there's a skeleton in every cupboard
Keep in mind that many couples are experiencing a lot of stress during the holidays. It may seem that everything is rosy during the holidays but in practice, usually people are eating and drinking way too much to be as romantic as shown in the movies. Discussions get out of and, and yesterdays news gets blown up, so uhm.. Merry Christmas?
